Improvement is very dynamic and especially important in the context of the eight cylinders because you can improve in all areas, or all eight cylinders.
Improvement comes from training but also from innovation and experimenting. Just think if you improved each day or each month in all the eight cylinders, including improvement! One of our mentors used to hold up his forefinger and thumb about an inch apart and say “there is no magic bullet, we just need to improve a little bit, but in every direction.”
Usually the way to improve something is to simplify it. In the BDC we like to break it down to one thing at a time.
This also makes it easier to train continuously, because you can’t shut the BDC down to do training, you have to do it as you go, every day.
Daily Focus Points is a way to improve each and every day.
Choose a skill set, or process step and for a whole day focus on that point. You can monitor, coach and improve all day long. Set KPI’s and have some fun, maybe even a little game with some reward at the end of the day.
The next day move on to something else. You’ll get a forensic effect daily and this is the best way we’ve found to improve every day.
